Upcoming Events: Advocacy in Social Work trainings

This series of trainings will help social work students across all programs learn advocacy skills. Social workers bring unique skills and perspectives that can further assist advocacy efforts and political and policy campaigns. Through four interrelated modules, Julie Platt and Andrew Perrow (both COSA alums working in policy and political oriented positions) will help build skills and develop opportunities for real world application.

Bios:

  • Julie Platt is a Senior Associate at Bellevue Strategies, specializing in leveraging political and advocacy efforts to advance public policy. Her clients include multinational corporations, unions, and civil rights organizations, and she has successfully contributed to the passage of legislation such as Philadelphia paid COVID-19 sick leave, Whole Home Repairs, and increased public school funding. Julie has focused on integrating her passion for public health and social work with impactful political action throughout her career. Julie has received numerous awards for her work, including recognition as one of Pittsburgh Incline's "Who's Next in Politics" and City & State's inaugural statewide "40 Under 40." She is a Spark member on the Forum for Executive Women, a member of the rising leader at Project HOME, and serves on the boards of JJPI and the Philadelphia Film Society's Young Friends. She is currently an adjunct professor at the Jefferson School of Public Health. 
  • Andrew Perrow is currently a Political Coordinator with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. He has over a decade of experience in community organizing, political campaigning, and legislative advocacy. Throughout his career he has managed high-impact field operations that have led to numerous successful electoral victories across multiple seats and states. As a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Social Work with a focus in Community Organization and Social Action, he combines strategic campaign management with advanced community engagement principles that are rooted in equity and social justice. His work centers on building worker power and advancing labor rights through effective political mobilization, legislative advocacy on federal & state levels, and grassroots organizing.
