On Friday, September 27th, the 2024 Race &… Conference – Pitt Global: Africa and the African Diaspora took place at the William Pitt Union. The event featured a range of discussions, performances and presentations highlighting Pitt’s connections to Africa and its global diaspora.
The day started with a Global Marketplace at 9 a.m., where CRSP and the School of Social Work had tables showcasing their work. Dr. Toya Jones highlighted study abroad developments in Africa, while SSW doctoral student Daniel Abusuampeh also had a table presenting his research.
Attendees enjoyed an African Dance and Drum performance led by Dr. Kyaien Conner and her company, the Balafon West African Dance Ensemble, followed by the Global Showcase. During the showcase, Daniel Abusuampeh presented his work with the African Tribe Bridge Institute, Ron Idoko discussed the Racial Equity Resource Database (R.E.A.D.) and Dr. Kyaien Conner presented on her recent Fulbright-Hays Award which will allow her and Dr. Pernille Røge to direct a month-long seminar project in Senegal the summer of 2025.
The event also featured a luncheon with African-influenced cuisines and presentations, making it a day of engaging dialogue and cultural appreciation.
