Adoption Symposium: Challenging Common Beliefs and Elevating Lived Experiences

MSW alumna Joanna Mittereder is on the committee that recieved a Year of Discourse and Dialogue grant for an adoption symposium March 27th.

The kick off event is the night before is an in-person event. The speaker is a film maker and Korean adoptee who will be discussing his work, the Side by Side project. He examines the stories/feelings adoptees hold inside v. the narratives that the world tells. It’s a very moving and eye opening presentation.

The symposium can be attended both virtually and in-person. The keynote, Dr. Hasberry, is a transracial adoptee and was also a teen birth mother. She is an educator and therapist. She talks about changing the narratives around adoption.

There is also a panel including 3 Pitt School of Social Work alumni, who are adoptees and also working the field to change the narratives around adoption.
The symposium is free. Students are welcome. CEUs for social workers are available.
