Child Welfare Education and Research Programs

The Child Welfare Education and Research Programs provide a continuum of professional development programs designed to prepare, strengthen and enhance the child welfare workforce.

These programs are a cooperative effort among the federal Administration for Children and Families, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, the Pennsylvania Children and Youth Administrators, and 17 schools of social work.

Child Welfare Workforce Excellence Fellows Program

The University of Pittsburgh’s Child Welfare and Research Programs recently concluded a five-year workforce development project in August of 2023.  Funded by the National Child Welfare Workforce Institute the University of Pittsburgh was one of seven Workforce Excellence sites across the country.  

Children, Youth & Families Certificate

The Children, Youth and Families Certificate Program is designed to prepare MSW program graduates to provide services to at-risk children and families through a wide range of public and private agencies.

Funded Internships

Funded Internships at the Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families. Available to University of Pittsburgh BASW and MSW students. Stipends offered.

Child Welfare Education for Baccalaureates (CWEB)

The CWEB program is a cooperative effort among the United States Administration for Children and Families, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, and fifteen undergraduate social work degree programs in Pennsylvania.

Child Welfare Education for Leadership (CWEL)

The CWEL program is a cooperative effort among the United States Administration for Children and Families, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, the Pennsylvania Child and Youth Administrators and thirteen accredited schools of social work in Pennsylvania.

Project Descriptions & Implementation

The intent of the CWEB and CWEL initiatives is to provide programs which will make undergraduate and graduate social work education available to qualified, prospective public child welfare workers and current county child welfare agency employees throughout Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Child Welfare Resource Center is a national  leader in advocating for an enhanced quality of life for Pennsylvania’s children, youth, and families.

Act 31 On-line Training

The School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh through its Child Welfare Resource Center and Continuing Education Program offers Act 31 On-line Training for LSW/LCSW, LPC, and LMFT professionals in Pennsylvania.
