Longtime professor passes away

Dear Social Work Community, It is with great sadness that the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work shares the passing of one of our most beloved leaders. Dr. Morton “Moe” Coleman passed away on Monday, January 28, 2019. Dr. Coleman was a professor at the School for decades, served as acting Dean from 1970-1972, and was the founder of Pitt’s Institute of Politics. On a more personal level, he was a mentor and friend to generations of students and faculty members. His influence on the lives of those who knew him will live on in their work dedicated to those ideals he upheld: community, social justice, and a commitment to helping those most in need. While I did not have the privilege to work directly with Moe, I was lucky enough to meet him and see his wonderful talk last fall (“Reflection on 60 Years of Community Organizing”), which turned out to be his final public lecture. I encourage you to watch it to not only learn more about the history of his work and the history of community organizing, but to reflect on the impact of a legend who helped to shape the field. We are gathering personal remembrances of Moe so that we can share them with the entire School of Social Work community. Please share your brief reflections and fond memories with our Director of Marketing and Communications Shannon Murphy at shm87@pitt.edu. Moe’s funeral will be held on Thursday, January 31, 11:00 a.m. at Ralph Schugar Chapel. in Shadyside.  Viewing is 9:30 - 11 am before the funeral service at 11 am at Schugar's Funeral Chapel. It is difficult to lose someone who is such an icon, friend, and mentor to so many.  I hope we can take strength from his life and inspiration to continue to work towards a better world for all. Sincerely, Betsy Farmer
