Robyn Markowitz Lawler (MSW 2010), Associate Director of Penn State Hillel
Though I grew up outside of Philadelphia, I am a Pittsburgh girl at heart. I love spending my time on the water or working on embroidery projects, and I recently picked up pottery. In 2023, I published my first children’s book and am now brainstorming my second. With a busy career, three kids, and various hobbies, my life is always active and fulfilling!
Current job description
As the Associate Director of Penn State Hillel, I am responsible for overseeing all student engagement opportunities for undergraduate Jewish students, supervising our student-facing staff, and managing building operations, among other tasks. I collaborate closely with my team, student leaders, University officials, and community partners to create enriching experiences for our students. My favorite part of the job is witnessing the growth and development of both our staff and students. No one comes to Hillel and leaves the same person!
Who inspires you in your work?
During my undergraduate studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, I took numerous sociology classes (I was a sociology – human services major) with Dr. Kathy Bonach, my first real adult mentor, who introduced me to the field of Social Work. Her guidance has been influential in shaping my career.
What inspires me most in my work is the resilience of the students I support. Many have faced significant challenges, and being able to care for and assist them on their journeys keeps me motivated. I am passionate about helping students take pride in who they are. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with thousands of college students, and it is the standout individuals and their personal growth that truly inspire me.
What is your biggest professional accomplishment?
The most rewarding aspect of my career so far is witnessing the growth of students and staff in real time, and seeing former students succeed in their chosen fields. It is so fulfilling to see them excel and achieve notable milestones. When students return to share that their achievements, such as earning an MSW or entering the Jewish professional field, were inspired by our time together, it is the greatest reward.
My biggest professional milestone as a Hillel professional was receiving the Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Award at the Hillel International Global Assembly conference in 2022, amidst 2,000 colleagues, was a significant honor and a highlight of my career.
How has the social work education you received at Pitt helped you in your career?
My MSW has equipped me with the tools and skillset to succeed in various careers, including higher education and non-profits. Although my concentration was in Direct Practice, my work closely aligns with the Community Organizing and Social Action track. Despite Pitt's large size, the MSW community is close-knit and supportive, and the degree opens many doors. While students have many options for their education, the Pitt School of Social Work stands out.
What is the most significant thing you learned at Pitt SSW?
This is such a challenging question to answer. I, of course, learned what it is to be a social worker, and I also learned how to do things like multi-task, self-care, and follow my instincts. I learned how to be a professional, collaborate effectively with others, network, and acquire valuable skills. Going to the Pitt School of Social Work was a transformative experience for me, and if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would. I gained so much from the School of Social Work because I invested a lot of energy into the experience.
What motivated you to pursue a degree in social work?
I always knew I wanted to help people, but ultimately Dr. Bonach who introduced me to MSW programs.
What's your favorite memory of the Pitt SSW?
My undergraduate experience was at a small school, and I remember feeling nervous about going to Pitt – a much larger school. Fortunately, many of my friends from IUP ended up at the School of Social Work, which made the transition easier. Going through the program with my best friend from undergrad was a highlight, and my best memories of both undergrad, and graduate school are with her.
How much do you rely upon your Pitt SSW network in your work today?
I remain in touch with the peers and professors with whom I formed strong relationships during the program. I have been a field instructor for many years, and although I haven't lived in Pittsburgh for the past five years, I have continued to serve as an off-site field instructor for the school.
When I was working at Hillel in Pittsburgh and the Tree of Life shooting occurred, my contacts at the School of Social Work quickly sprang into action, providing supportive care for our students. I am forever grateful for the generosity and support the School of Social Work provided during that time.
I try to stay as connected as I can be, even though I no longer live in Pittsburgh. The school has given me so much, and I try really hard to give back when I can!
What advice would you have for young Pitt SSW alumni?
I would tell a young Pitt alumni to utilize the school’s resources, and say YES to the opportunities the school has to offer. The career center, professors, your peers. Stay connected. You never know when an opportunity will come.
