Learn more about youth perspectives on safety and outcomes at group homes by exploring this new paper by Kess L. Ballentine, Christina Huerta, Daniel Hyung Jik Lee, and Elizabeth M.Z. Farmer.

We’re excited to announce the release of ‘The importance of youth perspectives in understanding perceptions of safety and outcomes in group homes’, by Kess L. Ballentine (Pitt PhD alum), Christina Huerta, Daniel Hyung Jik Lee, and our very own Dean Farmer. This is the only study to date that examines the relationship between youth’s initial assessment of group home quality and safety and their later treatment outcomes. The findings of this study highlight the importance of including youth voices in developing safety standards and practices in out-of-home placements.

Key Findings:

  • The critical importance of youth perceptions of caring, fair staff and safety as they begin their time at a group home.
  • The significance of building trusting and safe relationships between staff and youth.
  • Safety practice and policy at group homes must incorporate and integrate youth perspectives.
