Colson Whitehead Speaks to Westinghouse CHS Class

Colson Whitehead, NYT bestselling author and McArthur Fellow, spoke to the students in the School of Social Work’s Introduction to Social Justice course at Westinghouse Academy. He discussed his highly acclaimed book, The Underground Railroad. The book was an Oprah’s book club selection and the audience was fascinated to learn about his experience meeting Oprah. Students had the opportunity to ask Mr. Whitehead a host of questions about his books, his journey into writing, and his life as writer. The experience was both enlightening and encouraging for the Westinghouse students, as it exposed them to a literary artist’s approach to addressing challenging issues such as slavery.
